江南制造局是19世纪中国洋务运动时期最大的军工企业,其机构翻译馆,于1868年6月建成开馆,是19世纪最大的西书翻译机构,也是传播近代自然科学最主要的阵地。该馆所出版的译著,代表了当时绝大多数国人所能了解的西方科技知识的最高水平。翻译馆在中国近代科技史和中西文化交流史上具有不可磨灭的历史地位。

Jiangnan Arsenal, founded in 1865 by the late-Qing Government, was the biggest military enterprise during the westernization movement. Its translation department was the largest institution set up to translate western books and introduce modern natural science. The translations accomplished at the department represented all the western scientific knowledge available to Chinese people back then. Thus enormous were the contributions made by the department to Chinese modern scientific history and Sino-western cultural communication history.
