As a special type of urban space, historic district renewal process is one of the problems we are facing in China's urban development. This paper applies theory of space production, through case study of Shantang historic district in Suzhou, to analyze social structure before and after the renewal, as well as the change process of the district space type. It is believed that the process has eliminated the traditional social relations, and built up another open system of social structure as a replacement. The resulting demand for production of new space will lead to the landscape reconstruction. Finally, the paper suggests a more appropriate way to renew such historic district.
