I argue that two conflicting spaces exist in China Boy, and the uniformed means of power negotiation between the two spaces is violence. Violence is used both to produce the right body, and to define the essence of American culture, and Americanness. I also attempt to analyze how poverty and other class limitations contribute to Asian Americans' sense of being primarily culturally different, and cultural epistemologies popular in Chinese American literary studies may obscure the structural hierarchies of race and class.
