Conrad' s Heart of Darkness and Hudson' s Green Mansions belong to the same period ; what' s more, the latter is a kind of dialogue with the former with regards to its portrayal of nature ( esp. the forest). The basis of the dialogue is a shared view of nature, concerning about man' s overexploitation of nature and their similar racial chauvinism, but the two works also manifest major distinctions: Conrad's forest is dark, mysterious and sinister, while Hudson's bright and awe-inspiring; Conrad' s native blacks are identified with nature, while Hudson' s Indians are the antaeonists of nature.
