A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man ends in the protagonist’s self-exile. In order to pursue the freedom and independence, Stephen Dedalus exiled himself to be the truly independent artist. In the Old Testament, Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt where they were the slaves to live the free and independent life. In light of the similarities, these two literary texts are directly connected.
