Beasts by famous contemporary American woman writer Joyce Carol Oates is a masterpiece that is concerned about American university life and explores the complexity of human nature. This paper analyzes the well-designed suspense in the novella, clarifies intertextual relations between this novella and other texts in European and American literary history, and summarizes Oates＇ insights into complexity and dark side of human nature in combination with some of her words, and her strong concern with reality expressed in her fiction.
