Humanism is Edward Said' s major and ultimate critical concern. Reconsidering and criticizing the traditional huamanism, Said redefines humanism' s range. However, despite his proposal for establishing a new paradigm of humanism, and his commitment to humanistic criticisms, Said cannot totally free himself from the shackle of the traditional humanism, and furthermore, has to refer to the antihumanistic critical framework. Therefore, Said' s humanistic stance is profoundly contradictory. As an example of Said' s application of his own humanistic ideal to critical practices, Orientalism is paradigmatic of the contradiction.
