As one of the most devastating pests of corn, the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera Leconte, which likely originated from the bordering region between North America and Central America, has been rapidly expanding its distribution into Europe since 1992. With its significant invasion and pest status, it poses a potentially- destructive threat to corn production in China. To prevent its invasion into China, the biology and dispersal history of the subspecies were reviewed, and its potential geographic distribution in China was predicted using GARP software in this paper. This rootworm could establish in the provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Gansu, Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet. Among the above regions, the southern Northeastern Plain, the southern North China Plain and the Wei River Plain, overlapping the main corn belts in the country, were expected to be most suitable for the potential invader. The possible introduction routes, locations vulnerable for invasion and quarantine measures of the western corn rootworm were analyzed and discussed.
