Mother

申葆青教授,也就是小歌老师的母亲,是我国著名英语教育专家,曾任国际关系学院英语系副主任,长期致力于我国英语高等教育和社会教育的教学研究。2009年11月5日,申葆青教授因病在北京去世,享年82岁。申葆青教授20世纪80年代曾在中央人民广播电台主讲《星期日英语》、在北京电视台主讲《英语时文选读》,以其出色的专业功底、严谨的治学态度、特有的风采魅力,给千千万万的大、中学生和在职学员留下难忘记忆,对我国改革开放前后英语教育的普及和发展产生过深远影响。在这里,我们对申葆青教授的去世表示沉痛的哀悼,并以此文纪念这位给中国的英语教育事业作出巨大贡献的教育家。

My mother passed on. The dreadful call came at 1：30 am on the morning of November 5, and by 8 o＇clock that morning I was on the first flight available out of New York to Beijing. One only loses his or her mother once. Nobody knows what the feeling is until the moment comes. The first few hours in the flight, I felt numb; I didn＇t know how I should feel, and I was trying to figure out why I was on a flight to Beijing. As the flight was approaching Beijing, I started to realize that Mother was gone, and I was coming home for her funeral. Images of Mother, so remote yet so clear, flashed through my mind.
