Modern universities strive hard to achieve their incompatible goals of maintaining university freedom and serving society. In order to protect academic freedom and retain self-government, they must keep appropriate distance from society. Meanwhile, their unavoidable social responsibilities require them to go beyond the ivory tower and engage themselves in social life. Faced with the dilemma, can modern universities find the balance point? Derek Bok gives a positive answer and advances a lot of pertinent suggestions in his famous book Beyond the Ivory Tower: Social Responsibilities of the Modern University.
