The novels of the English writer Joseph Conrad in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century bear a strong sense of loneliness. Viewed from the descriptions of natural environment, the characters in Conrad's novels are always far away from their homeland and hve in a strange environment. Viewed from the descriptions of social environment, the characters in his novels do not identify with the society and their inner worlds are unknown to others. Through employing the Lacanian theory of subject, we can develop a deeper understanding of Conrad's novels via analyzing the sense of loneliness in the novels from the perspectives of language, nature and society.
