West Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project, located on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, has a 320km-long water transfer route. The construction ventilation of the extra-long tunnels of the project is a great concern. So far there is no health standards available in China dedicated for the construction environment in tunnels on high plateaus. If the health standards for tunnels on plain were adopted for tunnels on high plateaus, where the atmospheric pressure is low and the oxygen is insufficient, the health of the workers would be jeopardized. Health standards for the construction en- vironment in tunnels on high plateaus are proposed on basis of the climatic characteristics of high plateaus and the exist- ing health standards for tunnels specified in Chinese and foreign specifications. The proposed health standards can pro- vide reference for the construction of tunnels on West Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project.
