Many of the characters in The Woman in White are suffering from diseases, such as Laura' family genetic disease neurosis, Marian from typhoid, Perceval's father, who was born with deformities. Disease is not only the method the author used to shape the characters, but also a kind of metaphor for the certain phenomenon. In The Woman in White, neurosis is the metaphor for United Kingdom's imperfect legal system, and it is also the metaphor for the moral and ethical shortcomings of the upper class British family and blood lineage.
