In the Sound and the Fury, Faulkner's first masterpiece, the heroine Caddy was a beautiful, kind, and warm-hearted girl. However, just bexause of the pressure that her family gave, and the traditional, idealized Southern code, she became a promiscuous, degenerate woman from a pure girl. By portaying such a tragic character, Faulkner strongly criticized the women images in traditional code and deeply showed a fact that in the early 20th century women had a low social status and were treated unfairly. At that time, women got only few economical, political and educational rights. Thus Faalkner further revealed the suppression and devastation of society to human nature.
