This paper intends to construct the consistency of T. E. Hulme's thought which anticipates modernism. First, the paper systematically examines, interprets and critiques the major critical works of Hulme, revealing the three stages of his intellectual development: the poetic approach to the epistemological knowledge of the world, the fight against the idea of the limitless of human power and the championing of the ethical regulation of human nature. Thus the paper is able to demonstrate the consistency of Hulme's critical ideas and to reveal his system of epistemology centered on the concerns of the limitations of human nature. Finally the essay points out that Hulme's epistemological conception determines his artistic ideal that takes knowledge of human nature as its major target, the ethical value as its major quantum of standard, and the circularity of abstraction and empathy as its major principle of creation. This artistic ideal reaffirms Hulme's role as a forerunner in the genealogy of modernism.
