Being the third largest city in the United States, Chicago was a typical city during the traditional urbanization. However, relatively decentralization and multi - polar model have become dominant pattern of urban development since early of the 20th century, which can be defined as metropolitanization or neo - urbanization, with Los Angeles as the typical city. In the middle of the 20th century, Chicago also transformed from a traditional to a new city, exemplifying the neo - urbanization. Such transformation, although following a divergent path compared with Los Angeles, reflects common trend of urban development in the world.
