A Commentary on Zhang Shiying’s Returning Home:My Philosophical Life

著名哲学家张世英先生晚年所阐扬的新"天人合一"、"万有相通"的哲学体系,绝不能被视为是对原始的"前主客关系的天人合一"的简单重复,而毋宁是一种辩证的更高层次的回归。在深入钻研的基础上,张先生对主体性哲学既有热情的肯定与吸收,又有独创的超越与发挥,他所提倡的是一种既有"万物一体"的高远精神境界,又强调发挥人的主体性、奋发有为的积极进取之学。这一致思取向继承了"五四"以来熊十力、冯友兰、金岳霖诸家建构现代中国哲学的优良传统,在充分体认中西文明的基础上,回归文化元典,会通中西理论,融合以期创新,实现了民族性与现代性的完美统一。张先生以"归途"二字来概括其哲学生涯,既是个人回归自我精神家园的真实写照,对当代中国哲学研究也不无借鉴与启示之意义。"归途"既是中国哲学的归乡之旅,也是民族思想原创的超越之途。

Mr. Zhang Shiying is a famous Chinese philosopher and in his later years he advocates a new philosophy of 'unity of heaven and man' and 'all beings are related', which is not a simple response to the previous understanding of 'unity of heaven and man with a subject-object relationship' but a kind of returning to a higher level of dialectics. Through a detailed study, Mr. Zhang gives his approval of subject philosophy and accepts some of its good elements and has his innovation and transcendence. Mr. Zhang not only advocates a noble spirit of 'all beings are an organic whole' but also emphasizes human subjectivity and enterprising spirit. This is an inheritance of the fine tradition of modern Chinese philosophy constructed by Xiong Shili, Feng Youlan and Jin Yuelin. Mr Zhang has a good understanding of Chinese and Western civilizations and theories and has his innovation based on his understanding of the classics, a perfect unity of ethnicity and modernity. Mr. Zhang uses 'returning home' as the summary of his philosophical life in this book, which is a truthful record of his spiritual return and philosophical transcendence and has much significance to the study of Chinese philosophy.
