During the 61 years of Chinese Exclusion Act from 1882 to 1943, Chinese were the only ethnic group who was barred from the free entry into the United States. The earthquake at San Francisco in 1906 offered an opportunity for Chinese Americans to claim citizenship through legal procedures and therefore enabled many Chinese to enter America as Paper Citizens. This thesis aims to analyze the historical, economical and cultural backdrop of this immigration group, exploring why and how the phenomenon came into being and expounding its racism root.
