Ji Xianlin,National Studies and Oriental Culture

季羡林先生离我们而去了。围绕季先生,有三个话题在学术界曾经讨论得很热烈。一是季先生请辞国学大师、泰斗、国宝三个头衔;二是季先生有两向句言,叫作"三十年河东,三十年河西","二十一世纪是东方文化的世纪";三是与此有关的关于什么是国学、如何弘扬国学的讨论。从人类历史长过程看"三十年河东,三十年河西"可能是规律,国学可以分为狭义、中义、广义,季先生对大国学有着特殊贡献,大师是一个无甚意义的虚衔,中国许多"大师"却是重大建树为零的"零大师"。

Mr. Ji Xianlin has left us forever. About him, there used to be three warmly discussed topics. First, he asked to be removed from the titles of ＂National Studies Master＂, ＂Top Authority＂, and ＂National Treasure＂. Second, he once made two famous remarks： ＂Times are changing all the time＂ and ＂The 21st century is the century of oriental culture＂. Third, discussions arose hereafter about the definition and dissemination of national studies. Prof. Ji had such a complex about China and oriental culture that it never suffices to write about him. He has become a symbol which tells us that there is nothing bad about being a good person. And that＇s enough.
