Trefoil factors(TFFs) present in the serum are proteins secreted chiefly by mucus-secreting cells of the gastrointestinal tract. In response to gastrointestinal injury, they are rapidly upregulated and act as motogens to facilitate cell migration into the lesion, thus forming a protective harries in a process known as restitution. In addition, TFFs are promoters of cell proliferation, potent inhibitors of apoptosis, prevent anoikis ( cell death induced by anchorage independence ) and stimulate angiogenesis. It is likely that the deregulation of these functions contributes to TFFs-mediated oncogenesis. Recent compelling evidence has emerged from experimental and clinical studies to indicate a pivotal role of TFFs in oncogenic transformation, growth and metastatic extension of common human solid turnouts. This review summarized the current evidences about promoting cell proliferation, cell resistance to apoptosis and anoikis, promoting cell migration and invasion and stimulating tissue angiogenesis for the involvement of TFFs in human cancer.
