Strongly influenced by Confucius thoughts on serving the world with one's talents, Li Bai (701 - 762), like other poets in Tang Dynasty, has indeed an ambition for scholarly honor and official rank. However, he finds it so hard to be blend with the men of letters in his time because of his arrogant personality and casual elegance. In all his life, he has only served the court for less than two years (including his assistance to the eighth prince Li Lin). Such an experience has continually snuffed out his inherent ambitiousness. His feeling undervalued and unappreciated can be traced in his lines of poems as a complicated process to seek for his lost ambitions and to locate himself repeatedly. His own reflection and the changes of reality have made the episodes of Li Bai's ambitiousness for scholarly honor and official rank even more comolicated.
