This paper reports on the findings of group interviews focusing on the Chinese college students' reading of an American situation comedy Friends. It is found that there are two features generalizing about the students' "interpreting activity" as well as three "decoding patterns" prevalent among these students. To explain how the features and patterns are developed, the author further explores the social and cultural factors which interfere with the decoding process. These findings help reveal the aesthetic and critical ability of contemporary Chinese college students, and to a certain degree, reflects the current situation of their international media literacy.
