Transylvania was originally the territory of Hungary. After Hungary was defeated in World War I, allies showed preference for Romania because the league of states wanted to use Romania to confront Germany and Bolsheviks. By virtue of this fact, Romania seized this rich land. In 1940, through the second Vienna arbitration, Germany and Italy designated the northern part of Transylvania to Hungary. Seemingly, the contenders of Transylvania were Hungary and Romania, but in fact, the fate of Transylvania was decided by those great powers according to their respective interests.
