Some important artifacts recently unearthed fromthe Dawenkou cultural site of Dadunzai in Pizhou, Jiangsu inclilding a stone bi with engraved sun and bird and a earved bone bird with engraved san and bird provide the archaeological evidence for the theory of sun - worship and bird totem in dongyi tribes. The engraved symbols on the handles of hook - shaped artifacts made of roe canines are similar to those of the Eight Diagrams recorded in Xici suggest that the Eight Diagrams originated from the Dawenkou period dating to five thousand years ago. It is earlier two thousand years than the popular point of view that the yi theory originated in the cross period of Shang and Zhou. The new discovery provides the valuable materials for investigating the dongyi civilization.
