Dou E described by Guan Hanqing and Anna in Eugene O' Nill' s Anna Christie present the social and female problems in Chinese and western culture in different ages, but they have some amazing similarities. Both of them are victims in patriarchal society, in which women have no freedom but the obedience to the society and reality, and they are controlled by men,who think they are the master of the female. Although Dou E and Anna resist against the oppression from evildoers and society in their own way, they still totally fail. They don' t realize the reason of their tragedy is that they are the Other in the society. In all the plays reflected the patriarchal society, no matter they are about China or the west, the ancient time or modern time, once the plays refer to the suffering of women, the tragic fate of female are usually coursed by their subsidiary status.
