In the process of college English learning, especially in reading, students will meet many new words. In most cases, such as in the exam, they have to infer the Chinese meaning of these words. After doing some research about this, four effective ways of inferring the meaning of the new words are concluded： to find out the typical one, to search the parts before and after the new word, to compare the new words with another familiar one, to decompose the compound word. Suitable use of these four methods will result in reducing the negative influence on reading effect, which is caused by the new words.
