The study of Greenwich Village, which is a cultural community of a long history in downtown New York, is of significance to the understanding of the development of New York＇s urban culture. This paper, from a historical view on the development of Greenwich Village, explores the relation between Greenwich Village and the urban culture of New York from the perspective of history, geography, media and culture, and coneludes that the ＂mainstream culture＂ of New York is close to the non-mainstream culture represented by Greenwich Village, whose present and past witness the vicissitude of the urban culture of New York.
