Objective To study the implication of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in essential hypertensive patients. Methods A total of 85 essential hypertensive patients were enrolled in this study and categorized into grade 1, 2 and 3 according to hypertension grading criteria. Patients have been discontinued antihypertensive and antihydealipidense medicines for〉 1 month and patients complicated with diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, hyperlipemia, or suspected having secondary hypertension were excluded, etc. Twenty-seven healthy served as controls. Plasma CO content and H2S concentration were determined. Results Compared with controls, No marked difference of plasma CO levels were found between patients with hypertension grade 1 and controls [(18.6±1.9)vs(21.1±2.4)mmol/L, P〉0.05], but patients with grade 2 and 3 had significantly lower Plasma CO levels, [(15.4±1.4), (12. 5±1.7)vs(21.1±2. 4)mmol/L, P〈0. 05]; Plasma H2S level in all 3 grades of hypertensive patients are lower than that of controls[(43.7±1.4) ,(37.6±1.8) ,(26.7±1.3) vs (51.4±1.4)mmol/L, P〈0.05]; Plasma CO and H2S are negatively correlated with BP levels(r=-0. 542, r=-0. 682, respectively P〈0.05), and decreased with the increasing of blood pressure. Plasma H2S are positively related with pleasure CO(r=0. 627, P〈0.05). Conclusion As a signaling gasotransmitters, plasma CO and H2 S might play roles in the pathogenesis and development of hypertension.
