Tony Harrison is one of the representatives of the contemporary public poetry. His poems are featured with double-voicedness, sounded with colliding voices from different social milieus which reflect that language is like an arena where different ideological notions and value judgments combat with each other. Paradoxically, Harrison uses both the elegant and Carnival rude words in his poems which betray his ambivalent attitudes towards elite education, culture and literary traditions and his torment pilgrimage of a split self from a working-class boy and an elite poet.
