摘要
立足G.C.
Based on G. C. Spivak and Judith Butler' s theorizations on sexuality, this article analyzes the journey of Sue' s female desire in Thomas Hardy' s male-centered novel Jude the Obscure, foregrounding unique female experience of mo dernity in the throes of desire and reflecting on the problematic of representing the female in the modem novel. Sue' s world of desire is not only nurtured with the Faustian spirit of modem progress but also overshadowed with social death and psychical death symptomatic of anti-Faustian drive. In her experiencing of modernity, Sue' s desiring subject undergoes three different tribulations of female identity: the intellectual journey of Sue' s female desire as a dream-seeker; the emotional journey of Sue' s female desire as a lover; the journey of subjective death for Sue overwhelmed with melancholia.
