Short Stories from Abroad,co-translated by Lu Xun and his brother almost a century ago, although positively appraised and much reviewed, was not well received as a matter of fact. From the perspective of translational norms,we may find that the purpose of the translators, the translation strategies and the classical literary Chinese language employed by the translators as well as the modernity of the stories themselves turned out to be in irreconcilable conflict with the public narratives and the mainstream of translational norms at that time. The stories translated could hardly be accepted by the readers and therefore failed to be transformed into cultural resources urgently needed then. This failure, however, resulted in a kind of exploration and construction of new norms,an innovative endeavor made by Lu Xun,his brother and their contemporary translators in the New Cultural Movement.
