This paper holds that the five important dreams in A Dream of Red Mansions have their historical origin in an ancient Chinese legend of "a golden millet dream", which can be traced back in Lie Zi and evolve all the way through the Tang, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties into a unique temporal and spacial structure with philosophical connotation. Cao Xueqin adopted and reconstructed the legend of "a golden millet dream" in his narration and build up a grand narrative structure in A Dream of Red Mansions, which embodies Cao's profound philosophical view.
