An Analysis of the Stories about Yu Xiao during Yuan and Ming Dynasties

玉箫、韦皋两世姻缘的爱情故事在唐宋时已广泛流传,多种笔记小说中有记载。随着故事的流传,许多剧作家以此为题材进行创作,出现了元杂剧《玉箫女两世姻缘》,明传奇《韦凤翔古玉环记》、《玉环记》、《鹦鹉洲》,清传奇《玉环缘》、《玉指环》等戏曲作品。元明间的戏曲作品中,玉箫、韦皋形象不断演变,与各个时期的社会、文化背景密不可分。

The love story about Yu Xiao and Wei Gao was popular during Tang and Song dynasties, which was recorded in many literary sketches. With the spread of this story, many dramatists created new works regarding this story as their subject. Therefore, many opera works about this love story appeared, such as ＂Yu Xiao and Her Two Marriages＂ Zaju from Yuan Dynasty ; ＂Story. of Jade Ring of Wei Feng Xiang Gu＂, ＂ Story of Jade Ring＂, and ＂Parrot Island＂ legends from Ming Dynasty; ＂The Love Story of Jade Ring＂ legends from Qing Dynasty. The evolution of the images of Yu Xiao and Wei Gao in the opera works during Yuan and Ming dynasties was inseparable with the social, cultural background in different periods.
