Long Day' s Journey into Night is a family tragedy, and many critics regard the female character in this drama as the arch criminal of the tragedy, because she continually addicts to morphine which makes the whole family fall into melancholy and agonizing abyss. However, according to Carl Jung' s archetypal theory, the character of Mary in Long Day' s Journey into Night can be reinterpreted in a new way. When Mary refused her husband, James Tyrone, she could not balance her animus in unconsciousness and Tyrone living in reality, so she loses her living impetus , Mary has to hide herself behind the morphine in order to relieve her pains.
