The Jingmen industrial park of China's leading sports brand Li Ning Company Limited (Li Ning) has started production three months ago since its establishment on December 18, 2008. While still under construction, the 527-acre industrial park has produced over seven million sports clothes and three million pairs of shoes. The industrial park was co-invested by Li Ning and its suppliers as no one company can afford the whole project. Li Ning's move of its production base from coastal cities to a small city in central China aims to form a complete supply chain and to lower the increasing manufacturing costs in coastal regions, thus covering more markets in the hinterland. A good start. Yet, the move is not a pain-free panacea. Firstly, it was harder than expected to hire experienced workers at the local regions. Meanwhile, the labor costs in Jingmen were not much lower than that of coastal cities. Companies at the park are faced with longer distance from their raw material suppliers. To address the above problems, raw material suppliers should be invited to form an industrial cluster and logistic companies should also be introduced to provide a more efficient supply chain process at the industry park. It remains to be seen whether the sports giant can run faster in the coming new year.
