A key objective of translation instruction is to improve the ability of translation thinking. To this end, the research on translation thinking becomes a prerequisite. In light of cognitive psychology, cognitive linguistics, and psychology of thinking, this article first analyzes the characteristics of translation thinking process, the types of transfer thinking, and the qualities and structures of translation thinking. It then analyzes the structural differences in translation thinking between novice and expert translators. On this basis, it proposes that priority in translation instruction be given to cultivating the optimal thinking habit and monitoring thinking ability. Suggestions on translation instruction are also provided.
