The Beat movement in mid-twentieth century America challenges the highly repressive society and mainstream culture co-produced by Cold War hysteria and Puritan tradition. The Beats are by nature rebels and explorers. The true significance of this movement lies in its rebellion to the mainstream ideology that represses humanity, in its exploration of new beliefs, and in the Beats＇ efforts to defend and develop humanity in the modern world. Kerouac＇s novel On the Road most comprehensively presents the life of the Beats and most profoundly explores their spiritual quest. At the same time it also reveals their weaknesses. Therefore, this novel is in a sense a ＂Revelation＂ of the Beat movement.
