张恨水通过对市民性格的把握和刻画,传达出他对市民社会及其文化传统的了解、认同和批判。市民文化的消极面也同时浸染了张恨水,使他难以彻底挣脱封建文化传统的枷锁,难以完全摆脱小市民习气的束缚,这在一定程度上影响了其作品的思想深度和美学价值。
