传说中的"三皇五帝",即我国原始社会末部落或部落联盟首领,是古代传说中的全神"三皇"和半神半人的"五帝"。夏至周,是帝与王分辨的过渡阶段。秦王嬴政统一六国后,自认为他"德兼三皇,功高五帝",遂自命为"秦始皇帝"。西汉以降的皇帝,自命为天子。三皇五帝经历了由兴盛至衰亡的过程。经考证研究,"天帝"就是虞舜,织女是天帝舜的孙女。
