一幅中国传统妇女的自然主义写真——赛珍珠小说《母亲》刍议

Naturalistic portraitt of a traditional Chinese woman——on Pearl S. Buck' novel Mother

《母亲》是为赛珍珠赢得1938年诺贝尔文学奖的代表作品之一,由于翻译传播方面的原因,目前在国内这部作品的文学价值并未受到应有的重视。作品采用自然主义笔法,塑造出一个个性鲜明丰满、命运坎坷多难的中国传统的劳动妇女形象,突出描写了主宰其命运的两种性格——母性和妻性。《母亲》的特殊审美价值是不应忽视的。

Mother is one of Pearl S. Buck＇ masterpieces for which she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. So far the literary value of Mother has not got its deserved attention due to something of translation and propagation. The traditional Chinese hardworking women with distinctive and rich character but full of frustration in their life are portrayed by naturalism in this novel, which prominently describes two kinds of character dominating their fate ： maternity and the character as a wife. Compared with the novels at the same period, Mother has weaker sense of the times and the society but her distinctive value of appreciation should not be ignored.
