Abstract The unloading of silos is feared in many countries. Problems such as dridging and channeling,segregation,fermentation and condensation often occur and can cause very dangerous situations or badly affect the quality of the product. Storage and silo unloading is a complex process. It can only be approached as an in tegrated part of the entire feedmilling process. The design of the storage facilities is determined by many aspects such as the required capacities,the number of different raw materials and finished feeds,local conditions and the customers requirements with regard to functionality,userfriendliness,safety and durability. The unloading performance is highly determined by the product properties influencing its flow behaviour,together with the design of the silo and the hopper.
