On the Historical Subject of the Political Novels in Late Qing Dynasty

晚清时期,有识之士在愤慨于帝国主义侵略的同时,也对清政府的无能感到失望和痛恨,革除弊政,实现政治变革成为时代共识。在西方现代民族理论的指导下,人们痛斥满族统治者对汉族的压制与歧视,并叙说历史上和现实中清政府统治的残暴和无能,对其合法性产生质疑。同时,在文化和民族情感层面上,体现出对汉民族悠久文化传统的深深眷恋,以及对民族历史人物的崇敬与追忆,企图以此来重建以汉民族为主体的历史叙事,实现"国史"的重构。

In late Qing Dynasty, people with far sight felt angry at the imperialist invasion and disappointed at the corruption and disability of Qing Government. Abolishment of the weak system and implementation of politic innovation had become the consensus of the time. Guided by the western democratic theories, people attacked bitterly the oppression and discrimination of Man rulers against Han nationality and narrated the atrocity and disability of Qing Dynasty in history and in real life. And they raised doubt about the Government＇s legitimacy. Meanwhile, in culture and national emotions, they showed great sentimental attachment to the Han tradition of a very long history, and respect and memory of great historical heroes of their nationality, in an attempt to reconstruct the historical narration around Han Nationality.
