沈从文具有乡村与都市双栖生活的阅历。他从遥远的湘西流寓到北京,表明他本身就有着现代性企求。他漂泊在都市,思想上、情感上却无法融入现代都市生活,在现代都市里找不到自己的精神归宿。他常常以"乡下人"、"乡巴佬"自居并以此为视角反思现代文明的种种弊端,即体现了非都市而赞湘西(农村)的反思现代性的价值取向。

Shen Cong-wen bore the dual life experience in cities and villages fi＇om the west of Hunan to Beijing, which reveals his desire for modernity. Whether in ideology or in emotion, he failed to integrate himself into the way of life in the modem cities. He posed himself as ＂a countryman＂ or ＂a peasant＂, from the points of which he reflected the malpractice of modem civilization, viz. an embodiment of the value against urbanism and for ruralism.
