黄遵宪是中国近代杰出的政治活动家、维新思想家、外交家和诗人。他的一生,与日本的联系密切,是中国近代第一任驻日本使馆参赞;《马关条约》签订后,负责对日本进行苏州开埠谈判;戊戌维新期间,积极倡导以"日本为师"进行维新变法;罢官回乡后,在家乡积极倡导新学教育和留学日本活动;编纂了近代中国最全面、系统研究日本的著作——《日本杂事诗》和《日本国志》,成为近代中国了解日本的第一人。
Huang Zunxian was a prominent political activist, reformatory thinker, diplomat and poet in modern China. His life was closely contacted with Japan. As the first counselor of the Embassy of modern China in the Empire of Japan, Huang was in charge of negotiating with Japan about establishing a foreign trade port in Suzhou after the signing of Maguan treaty and actively proposed social reforms and innovations by learning from Japan during the Wuxu Period. After he was removed from office and went back hometown, Huang still advocated the education of western learning and sending students to study in Japan. He compiled.the Poems on Japanese Affairs and the Record of Japan which were the most comprehensive and systematical works studying on Japan and became the first person understanding Japan in modern China.
