英国在19世纪下半叶的外交政策被描述为"光辉孤立",这是英国在强国林立的欧洲保持自身政策灵活性和追求利益最大化的关键。就政治因素来看,"光辉孤立"是均势外交的一种表现,但深究其文化渊源,"光辉孤立"是英国政治传统中的保守主义和功利主义、外交文化中的制衡观念以及不列颠民族特性和岛国文化的综合结果。

The foreign policy of UK in the second half of the 19th century was called Splendid Isolation. It was the key factor for the UK to maintain its flexible foreign policy and pursue benefit maximization among strong countries in Europe. This policy, from the aspect of politics, was the result of the balance of power diplomacy. But further study of its cultural origin showed that Splendid Isolation is a mixed result of conservatism and utilitarianism in the political traditions of UK, the concept of checks and balances in the diplomatic culture of UK, the British national characteristics and island culture of UK.
