Objective To explore relation between intestinal mieroflora and growth and development of infants and young children aged 0 - 18 months in rural areas of Shaanxi province. Methods In cluster sampling method, 55 healthy beast-fed infants aged 0 - 18 months were selected randomly. They received physical examination and five kinds of bacteria flora in their faeces ( bacteroides, bifidobacterium, enterobacter, C. perfringens and lactobacillus) were detected quantitatively in culture method. The data were statistically analyzed by SPSS 13.0 software. Results The constituents of bifidobaeterium and lactobacillus in intestinal tract of infants in rural areas investigated were both lower. There were significantly positive correlations between lactobaeillus and body length ( r = 0.379, P 〈 0.01 ) and body weight ( r = 0. 296, P 〈0.05) of the infant. The ratio of bifidobacterium/lactobacillus (B/E) of infants with better nutritional status( B/E = 6.87) was significantly higher than that of infants with normal nutritional status ( B/E = 1.05 ). Conclusion The more number of intestinal lactobacillus and its higher intestinal implantation resistance may promote growth of the infant. In order to promote growth of the infants, their intestinal microflora should be improved.
