《红字》是一部以17世纪北美清教殖民统治下的新英格兰为背景,于1642—1649年发生在波士顿的爱情悲剧,整个故事围绕着红字"A"的各种象征意义这一条脉络主线而错综复杂地展开。
The Scarlet Letter is a love tragedy in Boston in the years of 1642 - 1649 in the setting of New Eng- land in the 17th century under the rule of Northern American Puritanism. The whole story developed through the main line of different symbolic meanings of the scarlet letter ＂ A＂.
