The subject matter of many well-known novels written by Zhang Hen-sui invariably ends with tragic, showing the spiritual trauma of the Chinese people during the transforming period from modem to contemporary times. They usually cannot control their own fate, struggling along to pursue the basic need of their existence, and their mind wander in the endless perplexity. As to the traditional culture, Zhang showed his strong attachment and confidence. By describing the tragic fate of the individual persons, he intends to tell us such a tragic truth that the traditional culture embodied in these individuals began to decline.
