近代徽州社会,由于外国资本主义入侵,人们思想观念和生活方式产生重大变化,商人们经商艰难,黄、赌、毒等不良生活方式流行,但同时,徽州人也在改变一些传统的迂腐短见,如歧视妇女、压迫佃仆等;另一方面,徽州人在近代对读书中举仍然表现出极大的热情。

In the modem times, with the invasion of foreign capitalism, people in Huizhou underwent great changes in their conventions and ways of living. Although Huizhou merchants had a tough time in their business and those unhealthy ways of living were prevailing then, people in Huizhou, on the one hand, changed some of their stubborn conventions, such as their prejudice against women, suppression on their tenants. On the other hand, they still showed great enthusiasm for studying and imperial examinations.
