"Guests of the Nation" , by which the Irish writer Frank O'Connor came to fame, tells us a friend-kills-friend story. This is a tragedy about the loss of home or paradise: not only the victims are permanently deprived of their paradise, but also the killers can not be spared from the same devastating deprivation, for, when they are destroying the lives of kindliness and honesty, they are, at the same time, destroying the cornerstones upon which their own spiritual home is founded, thus reducing themselves to the homeless. This is the ethic revelation the reader can gain from the tragic story.
